Supporting Deaf Employees
-
Problem
This was designed for a fictional non-profit that provides services to members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. I theorized that, if clients were part of the HoH community, then it would be not only likely but important for them to see HoH representation in the representatives providing services. Additionally, I discovered through my research that the HoH community is frequently underemployed and not given the proper support and accommodations as required by law. This is problematic but it is also reducing productivity.

Proposal
When providing training on social issues, it’s important to provide opportunities for learners to interact with the material in a low stakes environment. I proposed a micro-learning module pushed out to managers. This would allow managers to interact with and learn from module without the pressure of evaluation. Additionally it could be easily accessed and referred to in the future.

Process
Using Articulate 360, I developed a short course that provided concrete examples of actions managers could take to support HoH employees in a concise manner. After running the course through several beta testers, addtional changes were made to streamline the learning check in the form of a matching game.

Product
The final micro-learning module is colorful and inviting. It provides a gamified check for learning as well as an easy checklist of actionable steps a manager could implement quickly. There are links to supplemental information for those wanting a deep dive on these issues.
